Tel Aviv

funicular subway

Opened in 1959, the Carmelit is currently Israel's only subway. The 6 station, 1.75 km metro is actually a funicular railway, and has nothing to do with the
Carmelite nuns. Stenciled at the end of each car is Leviticus 19:32, “Stand for an elderly person.”

light rail system for the city was also planned, though it was never approved. The 22 km line would have run between Kiriyat Ata and the Checkpost intersection and was to be completed in 2009. A lower cost option, a partial Bus Rapid Transit line known as the Metronit, is under construction and scheduled to open in 2011.
